How Long Should You Stay in a Sauna: Start and Stop
In a dry sauna measuring 70–90 °C at the head of a seated bather, a healthy adult's round runs 5 to 15 minutes, followed by a cool-down at least as long as the round itself. Begin at 5 to 10 minutes if you are new or unacclimatized. Steam rooms near 40–48 °C with saturated air, and infrared cabins at 45–65 °C, are separate exposures that do not share that clock. Leave at the first dizziness, nausea, headache, clammy skin, or pounding pulse, whatever the timer reads. If you take blood-pressure medication, live with cardiovascular disease, or have been drinking, the safe duration is the one your clinician sets, and it can be zero.
A clock measures the wrong thing
I spent years booking scans off a wall board of modality slots. Nobody ever phoned to ask how many minutes they should lie inside the CT scanner; a physician ordered a protocol, a technologist ran the machine at set parameters, and the clock was an output rather than an input. The sauna question arrives backwards. People ask for minutes because minutes are the only variable they control, while the two that decide the strain, air temperature and humidity, go unmeasured.
The size of that gap is now on record. In a 2026 paper in the journal Temperature, Iida Laatikainen-Raussi and colleagues at the University of Jyväskylä put 50 healthy adults through four 10-minute Finnish sauna sessions and instrumented the cabin at six points. Heart rate climbed from 79.2 to 120.8 bpm, a mean rise of 41.6 beats. Core temperature moved 0.4 °C, from 37.4 to 37.8 °C. Body mass fell 0.10 kg per session. The part that changes the advice: each additional 1 °C of air added 1.40 bpm to the heart-rate response, and each percentage point of relative humidity added 0.37 bpm independently of temperature. Ten minutes is a container; what goes in it varies enormously.
That same study logged air at 1.73 m from the floor, typical head level, and at 0.90 m, sitting level. Head level averaged 69.0 °C, sitting level 50.8 °C. Humidity ran the other way, 27.7% up top against 53.8% at the seat. One cabin, one minute, an 18-degree spread depending on where the sensor hung.
Until early 2023 I answered this question with a flat 15 minutes, because a flat number is what readers ask for and it survives a headline. I dropped it after I started phoning facilities for measured head-level readings and kept receiving setpoints instead. A duration that cannot survive the question "at which bench?" is not advice.
What temperature and humidity is this sauna actually running?
The panel on the wall displays a target. Its sensor sits wherever the installer mounted it, often low and near the door, so it reports a number true somewhere in the room and rarely true where your head is.
Early in this beat I printed a hotel gym's control-panel figure as the cabin temperature in a piece about heat and blood pressure. A reader who owned a sauna-rated thermometer measured the same cabin at head level and emailed me a photograph reading 12 °C above the number I had published. I ran a correction. It cost me a paragraph and some standing with a reader more careful than I was, and I have not quoted a setpoint as a temperature since.
Fix this cheaply. Buy a dial thermometer and hygrometer rated for sauna heat, mount it at head height of the bench you use, and read it after a minute seated. In a commercial facility, ask what the heater is set to and treat that setpoint as a floor for the top bench.
Humidity needs its own reading, and in a dry sauna it will not hold still. The Jyväskylä protocol barred water on the stones for the first two minutes of each session, in the authors' words, to stabilize the sauna environment, then allowed free löyly from minute two to ten. Humidity in a dry sauna is an event rather than a property of the room, and anyone on the bench can trigger it without asking you.
Your first session, step by step
This is the sequence I give anyone starting out.
- Read the cabin before you sit. Thermometer at head height, hygrometer alongside it. Write both down for your first several visits.
- Arrive hydrated and weigh in. Dry your skin, weigh, note the figure. It is your only honest measure of fluid loss.
- Sit low for 5 to 10 minutes. The lower bench is cooler by a wide margin; start there even if the room is empty.
- Stand up in two stages. Sit upright at the edge for 30 seconds before rising, and leave at the first symptom rather than at the timer.
- Cool down for at least as long as the round. Published protocols use 10 minutes of rest outside the cabin between bouts, and the Jyväskylä study allowed 30 minutes between its 10-minute sessions.
- Weigh again, towel-dry first, and replace fluid. The American College of Sports Medicine's fluid replacement position stand recommends 1.25 to 1.5 L per kilogram of body mass lost when recovery time is short.
- Add a second round only if the first produced nothing. No dizziness, no headache, no racing pulse on standing.
For scale on step 6: Robert Podstawski and colleagues weighed 674 sedentary students before and after two 10-minute rounds at 90 °C and 35% humidity, in The Scientific World Journal in 2014. Women lost 0.37 kg on average and men 0.50 kg, rising to 0.70 and 0.82 kg in the overweight and obese groups. A milder cabin at 80.2 °C and 23% humidity cost 0.21 kg after one bout and 0.35 kg after two, recorded by Hugo Gravel's team in Physiological Reports in 2019. Roughly one litre per kilogram lost, which is why the scale and the water bottle belong to the same decision.
The symptoms that end a session before the timer does
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health defines heat syncope as fainting or dizziness with prolonged standing or sudden rising from a seated position, with dehydration and lack of acclimatization as contributing factors. That describes standing up too fast on a top bench in week one.
NIOSH's heat exhaustion signs are heavy sweating, extreme weakness or fatigue, dizziness, confusion, nausea, clammy moist skin, a pale or flushed complexion, muscle cramps, slightly elevated body temperature, and fast shallow breathing. Read that in a sauna context and the problem is obvious: heavy sweating and a slightly raised body temperature are the point, so several warning signs are indistinguishable from a session working correctly.
The workable rule is comparative. Anything new relative to your last few sessions in the same cabin ends the round: a headache you did not have last week, nausea, a heartbeat you feel in your ears, clammy skin while the room is still hot, or doubt about walking out unassisted. Exit first, evaluate outside, sitting down.
Dry sauna, steam room, infrared cabin: three exposures, three clocks

Two findings carry that table. Emily Jenkins's team at Cardiff Metropolitan University pushed the infrared format to 65 °C for 45 minutes: core temperature up 1.4 °C, heart rate from 74 to 153 bpm in 12 adults, one kilogram of sweat, in Experimental Physiology in 2026. Jessica Atencio's group at the University of Oregon, in the American Journal of Physiology in 2025, found the same format averaging 45 °C the least impactful modality for raising core temperature. Same three letters on the door, twenty degrees apart.
The strongest argument against all of this is that Finns have bathed for millennia without a hygrometer and the practice is safe at the population level. That is largely true, and I grant more than most measurement advocates would. A bather who has used the same cabin two hundred times reads their own strain better than any dial, and the löyly cycle already encodes the two things beginners skip, leaving and cooling down. What the tradition does not travel with is acclimatization. The person searching for a duration is usually alone in a hotel gym or a new home unit, with nobody standing up to mark the end of the round. Instruments are what you use before the instinct exists.
Sauna after a workout
Training leaves a fluid deficit already in progress and a sauna round adds to it. Rehydrate first, let your heart rate settle before entering, and shorten the round rather than extending it as a reward.
Before you build a ritual around it: Antti Mero's team at the University of Jyväskylä had trained men bathe 30 minutes in a far infrared cabin at 35–50 °C and 25–35% humidity straight after training, in SpringerPlus in 2015. After strength training, in their words, during recovery there were no differences in any variables between infrared sauna and no sauna bathing. After endurance work, countermovement jump at 30 minutes was higher following the sauna, 0.34 m against 0.32 m. A real effect and a small one; the recovery case is thinner than the marketing.
When to skip the sauna entirely
The 2018 review by Jari Laukkanen and colleagues in Mayo Clinic Proceedings names the conditions for which sauna bathing is contraindicated: unstable angina pectoris, recent myocardial infarction, uncontrolled hypertension, ischemic or decompensated heart failure, and severe aortic stenosis. The same review reports sauna use as safe for stable cardiovascular conditions, including stable angina and recovery from a heart attack. That distinction belongs in your appointment.
Alcohol is the one hard prohibition here. Anu Kenttämies and Kari Karkola reviewed every death occurring in a sauna in Finland between 1990 and 2002 for the Journal of Forensic Sciences in 2008. Death there is rare, under 2 per 100,000 inhabitants annually in a country with two million saunas for 5.2 million people. Half the cases were natural and heat exposure caused 25%. Half of all cases were under the influence of alcohol. Drinking before, during, or after a session compounds dehydration and blunts the responses that get you off the bench.
Here is what I cannot do for you. I have never read an image and never interpreted an ECG; the closest I have come to a diagnosis is diagnosing a missing fax. A published review is not personal clearance, and nothing above says your heart is fine at 90 °C. What I can vouch for is the paperwork layer: how to make a facility say what its cabin measures, the difference between a setpoint and a measurement, and that whoever prescribed your blood-pressure medication can answer the heat question in ninety seconds if you ask.
Three claims worth rejecting
That 30 minutes is a universal ceiling. The number is real and its context has been stripped. Tanjaniina Laukkanen's team ran 102 people with at least one cardiovascular risk factor through a single 30-minute session at 73 °C and 10–20% humidity, published in the Journal of Human Hypertension in 2018. Thirty minutes at 73 °C in dry air under supervision is a different exposure from 30 minutes at 90 °C with someone ladling water onto the stones. The figure travelled; the conditions that made it defensible did not.
That time in the heat detoxifies you. Lindsay Baker's 2019 review of sweat gland physiology in Temperature is direct on this. Sweat is roughly 99% water, and the role of sweating in eliminating waste products and toxicants is minor compared with excretion by the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract. Eccrine glands do not adapt to raise excretion rates. No duration converts a sauna into a filtration organ, and the belief rewards the one behaviour that gets people hurt: staying longer.
That the scale after a session measures fat. Podstawski's overweight male participants lost 0.82 kg across 20 minutes of exposure. One kilogram of body mass is roughly one litre of perspired fluid, and it returns with the next glass of water. Weigh yourself, record it as a hydration figure, put the litres back, and stop reading it as progress.
What belongs in your notes after a session is four figures: head-level temperature, humidity, minutes on the bench, and the difference on the scale. Four sessions of that and the duration question answers itself for your body in your cabin.

Is 2 hours in a sauna too much?
Yes, as continuous exposure it is unsafe for anyone. Published research protocols run 10 to 30 minutes per bout with cooling breaks between them. Two hours of cumulative time with full cool-downs and fluid replacement is different, though few people have reason to go there.
