How Long Does It Take to Walk 5 Miles? What Gets Counted and What Gets Left Out

Walking 5 miles takes 92 to 105 minutes of moving time for most healthy adults. That range comes from the comfortable walking speeds Richard Bohannon measured in 230 adults aged 20 to 79 for Age and Ageing in 1997: 2.85 mph for women in their seventies, 3.27 mph for men in their forties. Elapsed time is a different number. On a route with traffic signals, a 5-mile walk a watch logs as 1 hour 39 minutes of moving time takes about 1 hour 56 minutes door to door. At 2 mph the same distance takes 2 hours 30 minutes. At 4 mph, 1 hour 15 minutes.

The watch counts moving time. Your afternoon runs on elapsed time.

My reference route is 5.02 miles by GPS, from a transit stop to a hospital imaging entrance. One crossing of it, with every figure's source:

Seventeen minutes separate the two clocks: 6 minutes 40 seconds across six signalized crossings, 4 minutes 10 seconds on a freight train, and the rest on a water refill, a shoelace, and curb waits.

No walking-speed standard covers any of that. The 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices sets the pedestrian clearance interval from an assumed walking speed of 3.5 feet per second, or 2.39 mph; the 11th edition adds a total-crossing check at 3 feet per second. Both govern how fast you move once the signal releases you. Neither addresses the wait.

Until early 2023 I gave the 100-minute answer flat: 5 miles, 3 mph, done. I stopped because I started a stopwatch at the door and left it running. Across my logs since, the elapsed penalty on urban routes has never come in under 11 minutes, and it has passed 20 twice.

I recognize the error because I made it professionally for four years. A wall board says a non-contrast head CT occupies 15 minutes; a patient's morning does not, because registration and a wait for the technologist come first. I handed out slot durations and called them appointment durations.

Then I did it to myself. In March 2023 I walked to my own follow-up ultrasound on the 100-minute figure plus a five-minute cushion, and arrived 11 minutes after the appointment time. That department rebooks anyone more than 10 minutes late. The next opening was 19 days out.

The strongest case against this is the treadmill, and it is fair. Walking 5 miles on a treadmill at 3.0 mph takes 1 hour 40 minutes, moving and elapsed time equal by construction, and a rail-trail with no crossings is the same. Telling those walkers to add 17 minutes would budget a delay that does not exist. The objection locates the variable correctly: the gap belongs to the route. The figure to add is your own stop count times how long each stop holds you.

Five miles at every pace, with what each pace costs

The calorie column does not behave the way most walkers expect. By the Compendium's own numbers the cheapest way to cover 5 miles on foot is 2.5 mph, at 468 kcal. Slower costs more, because 2.0 mph keeps you out there two and a half hours. Faster costs more too, because walking economy degrades as speed rises. The 3.5 and 4.0 mph rows land within one kilocalorie of each other despite a ten-minute gap.

Those figures are gross, computed as METs times kilograms times hours, which counts resting metabolism you would have burned sitting. On my route 129 of the 489 kcal was metabolism I would have spent anyway; the walk added 360.

The MET values are not fixed either. Code 17190, "Walking, 2.8 to 3.4 mph, level, moderate pace, firm surface," has carried four official values in 31 years: 3.5 in 1993, 3.3 in 2000, back to 3.5 in 2011, and 3.8 in 2024. That edition also moved adults 60 and over into a separate Older Adult Compendium, so these figures describe adults 19 to 59.

What 348 feet of climbing adds

Naismith's rule, published in the Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal in September 1892, allows one hour per three miles on the map plus an additional hour per 2,000 feet of ascent. On my route that is 100.4 minutes for the distance plus 10.4 minutes for the gain, or 111 minutes.

My moving time was 99 minutes and my elapsed time 116. Naismith landed 12 minutes above the first and 5 below the second, which is no coincidence. His worked example in that report reads: "Distance, ten miles; total climb, 6,300 feet; time, six and a half hours (including short halts)." The founding rule of walk-time estimation was calibrated against the clock that includes the stops. Every GPS watch built since has reported the other one.

Steeper ground changes the arithmetic fast. The American College of Sports Medicine walking equation puts oxygen uptake at 0.1 times speed in meters per minute, plus 1.8 times speed times fractional grade, plus 3.5. At 3 mph on the level that gives 11.5 mL/kg/min, or 3.3 METs. Up a 5% grade at the same speed it gives 18.8, or 5.4 METs, a 63% increase for the same ground in the same time.

Almost nobody holds the speed. The Compendium prices climbing at a 1 to 5% grade at 5.3 METs and 6 to 10% at 7.0, which measures a different behavior: people slow down. For planning, use Naismith. A 5-mile route with 1,000 feet of gain averages a 3.8% grade and comes to 100 minutes plus 30, roughly 2 hours 10 minutes.

I cannot vouch for Naismith on a mountain. The most vertical I have logged on a 5-mile route is 348 feet, a highway overpass and a hospital hill. The corrections hill walkers add, Tranter's for fitness and Langmuir's for descent and poor terrain, exist because the base under-predicts on serious ground. I can vouch for the flat arithmetic and the elapsed-time gap on city routes.

11,318 steps, and why that is not 10,000

Hoeger and colleagues measured one-mile step counts at controlled paces for ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal in 2008. A 20-minute mile, which is 3 mph, came to 2,252 steps; a 15-minute mile came to 1,935, because faster walking lengthens the step rather than adding more.

My watch counted 11,318 steps over 5.02 miles, or 2,254 per mile, within a tenth of a percent of Hoeger's figure. Step length works out to 2.34 feet; a full stride, meaning two steps, is 4.68 feet.

Run it backward and the popular equivalence falls apart. Ten thousand steps at 2,254 per mile is 4.44 miles, leaving anyone who treats 10,000 steps as a 5-mile day about 1,270 steps short.

That figure never had a clinical origin. Yamasa Tokei Keiki launched a pedometer in Japan in 1965, after the Tokyo Olympics, and named it the manpo-kei: man for ten thousand, po for steps, kei for meter. I-Min Lee of Harvard, who later tested it properly, has said there were no studies of 10,000 steps when the device was built. Her test in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2019 tracked 16,741 women averaging 72 years old in hip accelerometers. Mortality risk dropped sharply between 2,700 and 4,400 steps a day, kept falling, and flattened around 7,500.

Cadence is the cleaner intensity signal. Catrine Tudor-Locke's CADENCE-Adults studies put the threshold for moderate intensity, meaning 3 METs, at 100 steps per minute for adults 21 to 40 and again for 41 to 60. My 11,318 steps across 99 minutes is 114 per minute. Ordinary days sit lower: Dall and colleagues observed 117 adults aged 30 to 62 at an average free-living cadence of 76 steps per minute.

Walking five miles against running five miles

Walking 5 miles in 60 minutes requires a 12:00 mile. RunRepeat and World Athletics analyzed 107.9 million recreational race results from 1986 to 2018 and found average 5K paces of 7:04 per kilometer for men and 8:18 for women: 11:23 and 13:22 per mile. A one-hour 5-mile walk is therefore faster per mile than the average woman's 5K race pace, and 37 seconds off the average man's, over a distance 60% longer.

That comparison flatters walking, and I would rather say why than let it stand. Race pace over 5 kilometers does not extrapolate cleanly to 8; runners slow as distance grows, so the true average 5-mile run time exceeds five times that pace. I have no matched 5-mile road-race dataset to close the gap.

Energy is measured, not extrapolated. Hall and colleagues put 24 adults through 1,600 meters of walking and running with indirect calorimetry for Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise in 2004. Walking at 1.41 m/s cost 340 kJ, running at 2.82 m/s cost 481 kJ: about 41% more for identical distance, roughly 81 kcal against 115.

That advantage vanishes at 12-minute-mile pace. The 2024 Adult Compendium prices "Walking, 5.0 to 5.5 mph, level, firm surface" at 8.5 METs and "Running, 5.0 to 5.2 mph (12 min/mile)" at 8.5 METs. At the pace required to walk 5 miles inside an hour, walking costs what running costs.

Biomechanics explains the crossover: the preferred walk-to-run transition speed averages 2.00 ± 0.20 m/s, or 4.47 mph, so a 12-minute mile sits about 12% above the speed at which legs switch gait on their own.

Training makes it possible anyway. World Athletics requires race walkers to keep one foot in ground contact and to straighten the advancing leg until it passes vertical, and Toshikazu Yamanishi covered 20 km under those rules in 1:16:10 at Kobe in February 2025. That is 6:08 per mile, putting 5 miles at 30 minutes 39 seconds. Race walking is a judged technique, not walking done harder.

Four laps of a track gives you your own number

  1. Find a marked 400-meter track. Four laps is 1,600 meters, or 0.994 mile.
  2. Walk the four laps at a pace you could hold for an hour. Start the timer on your first step and do not pause it.
  3. Divide your total seconds by 0.994 for seconds per mile, then multiply by five. That is your moving time for 5 miles.
  4. Count steps for one full lap and multiply by 20; twenty laps is 4.97 miles, close enough for a step target.
  5. Walk your real route once with auto-pause off, then subtract the track-derived moving time from the elapsed time.

That last difference belongs to your streets, not mine. I keep both numbers for different questions: 99 minutes tells me whether my walking has changed, 116 tells me when to leave the house. Only one has ever cost me a scan.

Questions people actually ask

Can I walk five miles in one hour?

Only at 5.0 mph, a 12-minute mile. That is roughly 12% above the average preferred walk-to-run transition speed of 2.00 m/s, or 4.47 mph, so most people break into a run first. The 2024 Adult Compendium gives walking and running at 5.0 mph the same cost, 8.5 METs.

How long does a five-mile uphill walk take?

Naismith's rule, from 1892, adds one hour per 2,000 feet of ascent to a base of one hour per three miles. A five-mile route with 1,000 feet of gain, an average grade of 3.8%, comes to 100 minutes plus 30: about 2 hours 10 minutes including halts.

How long does five miles take at 2 mph?

Two hours 30 minutes of moving time, at a 30-minute mile. That is slower than the 2.39 mph the 2009 MUTCD assumes when timing pedestrian signals, so allow extra at intersections. The 2024 Adult Compendium prices this pace at 2.8 METs, about 546 kcal for a 78 kg adult.

How many miles are 10,000 steps?

About 4.4 miles at an ordinary 3 mph walk. Hoeger's 2008 measurements in ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal put a 20-minute mile at 2,252 steps, making 10,000 steps 4.44 miles. Taller walkers cover more, shorter walkers less. Five full miles is closer to 11,260 steps.

How much distance can I walk in 60 minutes?

Three miles at a common 3 mph pace, 2.5 miles at a slow 2.5 mph, 4 miles at a brisk 4 mph. Bohannon's 1997 reference values for healthy adults aged 20 to 79 span 2.85 to 3.27 mph, putting most people between 2.85 and 3.27 miles.

How can I measure my own walking pace?

Walk four laps of a 400-meter track, which is 0.994 mile, timing from your first step without pausing. Divide your total seconds by 0.994 for seconds per mile, then multiply by five. Count steps for one lap and multiply by 20 for your 5-mile step total.
