Can Birds Get Fleas? What You Can Influence and What You Cannot
Yes, birds can get fleas. The species that most often attaches to poultry is the sticktight flea, Echidnophaga gallinacea, an adult about 2 millimeters long in the Merck Veterinary Manual photomicrograph, which embeds in bare skin on the comb, wattles, and face. Mites and lice are more common on many pet birds and backyard flocks, so a flea plan copied from a dog is the wrong station on the line. You can influence identification, housing, isolation days, and labeled concentration. You cannot change the parasite’s life cycle, its preferred skin, or the fact that a 101-gram cockatiel (Olkowicz, PNAS 2016) is not a 1,900-gram hen (NRC tables).
I write the bulletins that tell a factory why the product is coming out wrong. I am the last man to ask for a diagnosis. I look at a cage as a hopper.
Can birds get fleas, and how often is that the real finding?
Sticktight fleas are the main poultry flea in the Merck Veterinary Manual review (January 2026, Amy C. Murillo). Adults embed for days or weeks on featherless head skin. Eggs fall into litter or soil. The cycle takes about 1 to 2 months. Nest fleas such as Ceratophyllus gallinae feed on the bird and live mostly off it.
How often the speck is a flea is a different reading. Amy C. Murillo and Bradley A. Mullens surveyed 100 adult hens in 20 southern California backyards for the Journal of Medical Entomology (2016). Sticktight fleas were on 20 percent of properties and 18 of 100 birds. The chicken body louse Menacanthus stramineus was on 36 of 100 birds; northern fowl mite Ornithonyssus sylviarum on 7 of 100; poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae on 5 percent of flocks.
A Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory case (August 2024) shows a dirt-floor load: five 30-week-old layers from a house with an outside run, about 500 birds left of 1,000 placed, fleas on comb and face, body lice under the feathers, watery blood. TVMDL gives unfed adults as less than 2 millimeters, in clusters of dozens or hundreds. UC Riverside Veterinary Entomology (Murillo and Gerry, August 2016) notes that larvae need litter or soil, which hanging cages do not provide.
The RSPCA Knowledgebase (17 July 2023, Prof. Bob Doneley) lists the stick-fast flea as occasional on poultry, able to transfer if species share housing. Year-round spraying is rarely indicated for indoor companion birds.
How do fleas, mites, and lice differ before you treat?
Before any flea-treatment plan, compare mites and lice with fleas on visible location, host species, and life cycle. Merck names northern fowl mite as the most important parasite of U.S. layers. Virginia Cooperative Extension APSC-190P (Leonie Jacobs, 11 October 2023) puts those mites at 0.5 to 1 millimeter, with a 5- to 12-day cycle on the host. UC ANR Publication 8162 gives the chicken body louse at 3 to 3.5 millimeters and the shaft louse at about 2 millimeters.
| Parasite | Where you see it | Usual hosts | Life cycle | Adult size | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Sticktight flea | Comb, wattles, face | Poultry; also dogs, cats, people | Soil/litter; 1–2 months (Merck) | ~2 mm (Merck); <2 mm unfed (TVMDL) | | Northern fowl mite | Vent; on the bird day and night | Poultry (Merck) | 5–12 days on host (Virginia Tech) | 0.5–1 mm | | Poultry red mite | Cracks by day; bird at night | Poultry; bites people (Merck) | ~1 week; house infested 9 months | ~1 mm (UF/IFAS) | | Chicken body louse | Skin, often vent | Poultry | Hatch ~1 week; mature 3 weeks (TVMDL) | 3–3.5 mm (UC ANR 8162) |
Bird mites vs fleas is a location problem. Red mites leave by day. Northern fowl mites sit at the vent. Sticktight fleas sit in a dark cluster on bare head skin. Lice run when you part feathers. The Companion Animal Parasite Council lists Ctenocephalides felis on avian hosts, and E. gallinacea as a poultry flea that occasionally infests dogs and cats in the southern United States. Merck’s 2-millimeter adult sits next to a 2-millimeter shaft louse. Host, site, and whether it stays overnight are the readings that hold.
What can you set in the house, and what has the life cycle already fixed?
You can turn isolation days, wash temperature, labeled concentration, retreatment interval, and which birds you count. Generation time and preferred skin are already fixed.
Days since a new bird arrived is an exposure clue. The CDC birds page (15 April 2024) says to wait 30 days before introducing new birds, keep groups separate, and wash hands between them. USDA APHIS enforces a 30-day quarantine for imported pet birds except those from Canada. Agriculture Victoria (13 June 2025, poultry veterinarian Angela Scott) sets the same 30-day minimum and resets to day 1 if illness appears.
Cage-cleaning temperature is a spec-sheet number. The National Research Council Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (8th edition, 2011) states that effective disinfection can be achieved with wash and rinse water at 143–180°F (62–82°C); the traditional 82.2°C (180°F) rinse is water in the tank or sprayer manifold. Virginia Tech APSC-190P lists heat at 49°C (120°F) for 1 hour among mite-control options. You can strip litter. You cannot heat a wooden coop to 180°F with the birds still in it.
Treatment concentration belongs on a label for that species. Mississippi State University Extension gives permethrin at 0.05 percent on birds at 1 gallon per 75 adult chickens, for mites, and 0.1 percent for cages. Permethrin 0.25 percent dust is 1 pound per 100 birds. Those are poultry numbers. CAPC notes that federal law prohibits extra-label use of EPA-regulated pesticides. A mammal flea drop cannot be scaled by eye.
Retreatment follows a cycle you cannot shorten. Mississippi State University Extension says not to repeat carbaryl more often than every four weeks, or Rabon more than once every 14 days. The RSPCA says several mite treatments, 2 weeks apart, may be required. Texas A&M AgriLife says sticktight treatment kills only adult females, so it must be repeated weekly.
Bird body weight is the other skipped reading. National Research Council poultry tables put a typical Leghorn-type hen at 1,900 grams by 70 weeks. Olkowicz and colleagues, in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2016), reported cockatiel body mass of 101.0 ± 4.6 grams. USDA APHIS Animal Welfare bird standards split small pet bird species at 250 grams average adult weight. A mix written for 75 adult chickens has no honest conversion onto 101 grams. Weigh the bird.
Virginia Tech’s mite bulletin shows the cost of a late look. At peak, one bird may host over 100,000 northern fowl mites. Above 50,000 mites per bird, birds can lose 6 percent of their blood daily, with egg production down 10 to 15 percent.
Why a hen and a parrot are not the same machine
I took a food-processing certificate at the works after time on a cannery line. Much of what people call the flavour of a manufactured food is the shape of the equipment that made it. A hen on dirt and a parrot in a hanging cage are different machines. Copying poultry advice onto a parrot treats them as one hopper.
Poultry on dirt give sticktight larvae the sandy soil Merck says they develop best in. Murillo and Gerry say sticktight fleas are usually not a problem where birds sit in cages above the ground. Northern fowl mite still lives on the bird in either system.
A parrot that never walks a coop is a poor sticktight host unless it shares housing with poultry. Can parrots catch dog fleas? CAPC records C. felis on avian hosts. Indoor parrots rarely carry a breeding colony. The practical hazard is an EPA-labeled mammal product used as a “light dose” for a bird. Permethrin written for 75 adult chickens already assumes the 1,900-gram class. Keep the bird off treated pets until the coat has dried.
How to get rid of bird fleas, when they are fleas, is a two-station job. Merck starts with removing infested litter and dusting with permethrin or pyrethroids, and names insect growth regulators such as methoprene. TVMDL adds tweezers for small numbers and removal of bedding. UC Riverside allows petroleum jelly on attached adults, using only pesticides registered for poultry. Doneley, through the RSPCA, still sends the owner to an avian vet for the product.
Bird fleas in the house follow the off-host stages. Sticktight larvae live in soil and litter. European chicken fleas breed in nests. Red mites hide in cracks and will bite people; Merck says they cannot infest humans. One cage wipe with the same litter put back leaves the hopper full.
How do you get a name on the pest without borrowing a dog product?
The expensive mistake is the first bottle.
- Count the affected birds and weigh the one you will take in. The California survey’s 18 of 100 is a population figure. Yours is the flock in front of you.
- Look in the right place: head in daylight for sticktight fleas; vent for northern fowl mites; roost cracks at night for red mites; skin under feathers for lice.
- Collect a sample with fine tweezers or tape. Do not crush it.
- Strip litter and wash what will take heat. Use the Guide’s 143–180°F range on washable kit, or Virginia Tech’s 49°C for 1 hour where the material allows it.
- Use a product the veterinarian names for that species, at the labeled concentration. Mississippi State’s 0.05 percent on-bird permethrin does not transfer to a parrot.
- Repeat on the interval the cycle demands: weekly for sticktight adults if you are following AgriLife, 14 days for Rabon, 2 weeks in the RSPCA mite note, not more often than four weeks for carbaryl.
What you cannot influence is the generation in cocoons and soil. TVMDL notes that adults may stay quiescent in the cocoon for weeks or months if hosts are absent.
I have not treated a bird in my life. Get the parasite named, weigh the bird, and leave the mammal aisle alone.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get rid of bird fleas?
Have an avian veterinarian name the parasite first. For poultry sticktight fleas, the Merck Veterinary Manual starts with litter removal and a permethrin or pyrethroid labeled for on-bird use. Repeat on the label interval because larvae develop in soil. A companion parrot needs a prescribed product, not a poultry dust or a dog drop.
Can humans get fleas from birds?
The Merck Veterinary Manual lists humans among sticktight flea hosts. University of California Riverside Veterinary Entomology says infestation of people is uncommon. Bites can occur when you handle infested poultry. The fleas do not typically breed on human skin. Wash after handling, and treat the birds and the litter.
Can parrots catch dog fleas?
The Companion Animal Parasite Council records the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, on avian hosts, so a passing bite is possible. Indoor parrots rarely support a breeding dog- or cat-flea colony. Sticktight fleas are the fleas that attach to birds, usually after poultry contact. Dog and cat flea products stay on the mammal they were labeled for.
Why is my bird itchy if I cannot see fleas?
Mites and lice were more common than sticktight fleas in the Murillo and Mullens 2016 backyard survey: body lice on 36 of 100 hens, sticktight fleas on 18. Red mites feed at night and hide by day. Northern fowl mites cluster at the vent. Collect a sample and have it identified.
How long should I keep a new bird away from the others?
The CDC says to wait 30 days before introducing new birds to existing birds, with separate dishes and handwashing between groups. USDA APHIS uses a 30-day quarantine for imported pet birds except from Canada. Agriculture Victoria sets a 30-day minimum and restarts the clock if illness appears. The 30-day mark is isolation, not a flea diagnosis.
Do bird fleas live in the house after I clean the cage?
Sticktight larvae live in soil and litter, not on the bird. European chicken fleas breed in nests. Poultry red mites hide in cracks and can bite people, though Merck says they cannot infest humans. Strip the litter, wash what will take heat, and repeat on the interval for the named parasite.
